What is Skip Tracing

What is Skip Tracing?

Skip tracing is the process of locating a person who has become hard to find: someone who moved without a forwarding address, stopped responding, or is deliberately avoiding contact. The term comes from “skipping town.” In Australia it’s used across debt recovery, legal process serving, locating witnesses or beneficiaries, workplace and insurance investigations, and reconnecting family members. If you are looking for a skip tracer and want a free quote, be free to contact me.

Common uses

  • Process serving: locating a party to serve court documents (subpoenas, summonses)
  • Debt recovery: finding debtors or guarantors who’ve gone quiet
  • Legal proceedings: locating witnesses, next of kin, or beneficiaries in probate matters
  • Insurance and workplace investigations: verifying a subject’s location or current circumstances
  • Personal: reconnecting with lost family contacts

Data sources and techniques

  • Public records: electoral roll extracts (restricted access, only certain purposes qualify), court listings, ASIC company/director records, bankruptcy register
  • Land titles and property records (state-based, fee-for-access)
  • Open-source intelligence: social media, professional networking sites, public business listings
  • Licensed commercial data platforms available to PIs (credit header data, phone/address databases); access to these is generally gated behind a PI licence and a contractual data-use agreement
  • Direct and indirect inquiries: known associates, former addresses, employers, with care taken not to breach APP 6 (use/disclosure) obligations on anyone else’s data collected in the process
